DISCOVERING BARCELONA 1

We went to bed with the forecast of a wet day today but woke this morning to another beautifully sunny day in a truly beautiful city. We started with what is apparently a Spanish traditional breakfast “Chocolate con churros” , hot chocolate in cups into which you “dunk” the pastry of your choice. A little heavy and sweet to start the day for us but it certainly fixed our chocolate deprivation!

 Chocolate "con churros" for brekky!

Then off to test our capacity to conquer the local transport system – the underground in particular. It was so easy to understand the ticket and coloured line system we were on and off the right train in no time at all – very impressive. And so clean… no graffiti anywhere, and almost no rubbish in the streets… with the exception of cigarette butts.

What a choice? We laughed at the situations this could apply to!
Despite this most took the escalator!

Our “super fast” train bookings needed some adjustment for the rest of the trip. Nothing half an hour at the ticket counter couldn’t fix! We’re training it from here around the bits of Spain that we want to see, ending up when we meet with the others in San Sebastion.

The main station is near the Spanish square (Placa) an area that contains the old Bull fighting arena (now a shopping centre, mercifully free of any Westfield ownership!)

All "Bull" to us!

Museum of Art

We had planned a meal in tonight with purchases from the nearby markets – a scene to rival the best around the world – everything you can imagine, but being Sunday it was closed, so tomorrow perhaps?

Market selections

A special treat tonight though. As we passed by the historic 14th century Gothic Basilica " Santa Maria de Pi" yesterday we noticed a poster promoting a Spanish guitar concert there tonight by world renowned Spanish guitarist Manuel Gonzales. We were fortunate enough to get some tickets and are looking forward to it very much in the ancient space, in particular, the spectacular stained glass windows as a colourful backdrop to the performance.

Heavenly sounds tonight?
