HOO ROO HORNFLEU

It’s been four fabulous days here in Honfleur, the highlight being ‘Le Tour’ yesterday. Some terrific food, especially the steak two nights ago, and a lamb rack the night before that were exceptional and both meals a welcome relief from seafood and other regional delicacies – which we love, but on the move can prove a little repetitive.

Today we headed for Bayeux to see the tapestry there.

A dip in the English Channel

An amazing piece of storytelling embroided nearly a thousand years ago (and in better condition than our lounge room cushions) to tell the story of the Norman conquest (Battle of Hastings) in 1066. This photo does not do it justice but was the best I could do illegally!

Being in Normandy, we realized that this exact coastline was where the D-day landings occurred. So we headed off to the coast to see some of the beaches. One is now called Omaha Beach after the Americans who lost so many of their men there and who helped turn the tide of the war. General Eisenhower was I think, the brains behind the invasion. We went to the American Memorial/Cemetery and it was very moving and quite beautiful.

The plan, spookily celebrated a day after we were there

We are moving from here up to the Somme area, so are prepared to be further moved by the memorials up there to Commonwealth troops from WW1.

  1. Why did they pick an American name with an H in it? I love that you are engaging in illegal photography for our sake Dad :) Looking forward to the Somme. You're in the area where they love Australians, aren't you?
