Not yet very far into our travels, I would have to say we have had some really fabulous and interesting food. Turkish/Greek food is pretty interchangeable, they having been the same country for such a lot of their history. Like all good food ethics, the cuisine is based on local and seasonal produce. Therefore, you get lots of olive (in all it’s guises), tomatoes, cucumbers (which you see people eating like apples), eggplant, pomegranate and fruit of all descriptions (unfortunately we are too early for the figs), sesame seeds used in many ways. Bread - flat bread often cooked in front of you and served with mezze. Utterly addictive and full fat yoghurt. Honey, with the comb... Tea, dark red and sugared, comes from the Black Sea coast, and coffee - Turkish and Greek, both the same - sweet and strong! The Turks especially, LOVE sweet things; baklava, Turkish delight (stuffed with many kinds of nuts) and pastries far to numerous to mention. We’ve tried everything… and loved every bite.
Some of you have asked for some pics of the food, unfortunately we have sometimes consumed it before we remember to photograph it!
Eggplant, tomato and capsicum bake
Mixed kebabs to share

Perfect pomegranates
Teas and spices
Mixed seafood
Tea
Fresh anchovy and black eyed bean salad
Baklava
It all looks so delicious! I suppose they don't have many no sugar eaters there :)
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely living vicariously through your stomachs!
ReplyDeleteAmy, I think you'd starve here!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos - those pomegranates look fantastic... I might just go buy one - 'cept I very much doubt it'll look as good as those. Also - I'm presuming you didn't eat ALL that Baklava?
